Revolution of Rising Expectations

Remember when you first got on a computer? Remember how impressed you were at how blazingly fast everything seemed? No more retyping, no more white out, no more carbon copies, etc.. Yet now we get impatient when an application takes too long to launch, or the printer jams.

The velocity at which we're working has accelerated more than we realize. Imagine trying to do what you do today a mere ten years ago. Twenty years would be an unreasonable comparison now. How much more will we get done in our lives now? Well, of course you first have to think about subtracting all the down time and the time spent re- installing and upgrading this app or that OS. Still, you know we're moving at warp speed. There's a certain exhilaration to that.

Not only are we moving at warp speed, we're doing so nearly all hours of the day. How many of us use the hotel connection and cell phones on vacations? For many of us, the workspace has broken the boundary of personal space. Think about what your worklife would look like to you fifteen years ago. The "fifteen years ago you" wouldn't understand half of what the "today" you is talking about, so much has the language and the subjects we regularly talk about changed.

I think it's time to think about how far we've come thus far, and digest the vast changes we've absorbed. Instead, we're forever looking at the next new and big thing, or planning for the big thing that has yet to prove itself. How much time do we waste getting excited about that which never happens? In short, let's catch up to ourselves:).
