So You Want to Get Paid to Speak? As you may know, your humble publisher (that's me) has other lines of business in addition to WDFM. One of those other revenue streams is public speaking. In fact, I often draw on WDFM as a case history, and show firms how to set up their own content marketing vehicle. Speaking can be a wonderful way to earn from what you've learned. It takes me to exotic places and offers me the opportunity to meet fascinating people who make a difference. Lots of folks ask me how to go about the business of setting up a speaking practice that pays. I tell all of them to check out the National Speakers Association at http://nsaspeaker.org, where you can peruse their speaker database and learn lots about that business. Seminar audiotapes and books abound there as well. If you're really serious about becoming a speaker, I suggest you join the NSA and attend their annual conference in Washington DC, which is being held from August 5th-8th. The details are on their website. Platform mechanics, speaker marketing and promotion, and making your content more entertaining are a few of the topics covered at the conference. If you can't make the conference, buy the tapes. But do try to attend. Imagine a couple thousand people who love to talk getting together. It's quite an experience. You won't agree with everything you see and hear, but you'll find special nuggets that will pertain to your specific mission. The main sessions and seminars aren't the only reason you go to an NSA conference. Much of the value is found in the halls and at lunch tables, where you meet other speakers and luminaries such as motivational speaker Tony Alessandra, or futurist Daniel Burrus. I myself met motivational and sales guru Zig Ziglar at last year's conference. If you do sign up, tell them Larry sent you. |
