The Online Popularity Contest... or what you can do for me :)

Nowadays, it's not just about optimizing your website for what people search for, it's also about the search engines knowing how many other sites point at you. So, if you're a popular guy or have resources worth pointing at, the search engines see this as a substantial vote of confidence from the marketplace; one that's worth considering when ranking your site.

Just now I did a "reverse-link-lookup" at AltaVista and found 805 pages pointing to http://wdfm.com and 349 pages pointing to http://www.wdfm.com (since some sites use the w's and some don't). By the time you try it, I'm sure those numbers will change.

Please Point To Me: I could have a contest or offer some incentive for folks to point to http://wdfm.com, but as Net Consultant Ruth Stevens pointed out, many readers would probably do it if I simply asked. So I do that here, now.

Many of you email me, expressing good tidings for the value WDFM offers. If you yourself feel this way, and you could see your way to recommend and point to http://wdfm.com to from your site, I would very much appreciate it.

If your site has been reviewed in WDFM, you have copyright permission to post that review on your site with a link back to WDFM. (I think I've hyperlinked the URL enough by now, don't you?)

Only do this if you truly want to support the publication. I need to say here that I cannot offer reciprocal links in return, as that policy would then have so many "link-backs" as to become meaningless. Anyway, the WDFM archives (which are now free, btw) are our way of linking out to sites, accompanied with our pithy commentary. Those archives, our thousands of reviews, and our CPM calculators are in their own right fine Internet resources to link to.

Email me after you point to http://wdfm.com (I couldn't help myself this one last time) so I can thank you via email.

Hey, if this is successful for WDFM, I'll mention the increasing numbers of reverse links at AltaVista. If it isn't so successful, you won't hear about it again. :) LC
