More Notes From New York + NYC Links

I could tell you about a hundred different poignant things I've witnessed since September 11th. Flowers and cards in front of fire houses with people taking pictures. Notes from kids in Texas on construction paper covering plywood panels down on Broadway near Ground Zero, saying they pray for the cops, firemen and all who work through the rubble.

Color printouts of lost ones in subway stations, looking more familiar every day. Pictures in front of hospitals, pictures in Grand Central & Pen Station, pictures everywhere it seems, always with people studying them.

I could tell you so many stories that would break your heart, as they did mine. What's the lesson here? I see how impossibly small a late subway train is, and how trivial things really are. I make more of an effort to let others go before me out the subway exit or off the bus. "It's good to see you," is a phrase I've used often, and hear others using to those they see everyday.

We New Yorkers had our everyday fabric of life torn apart, only to see through to how fragile the whole cloth really is, both on a macro and micro scale.

Like many of you, many of us have gone back to work to restart our lives, as it were. But things are by no means the same. Most likely they never will be. Some of that is to the good. Many people here and everywhere have reassessed outlooks and what's important in life. Like so many of you said in response to my chronicle of September 11th and thereafter, "We're all New Yorkers now." Let me tell you, that is much appreciated here.

New Yorkers are a tenacious bunch who love to grouse about things, anything. The weather, the traffic, politics, you name it, they'll grouse about it. This is "Kvetch City" most of the time, but not now.

New Yorkers are a tough-minded lot who often enough have a heart of gold. Most New Yorkers are here because they're on some personal mission; they're on their way somewhere in their lives. That's what most New Yorkers have in common.

I came here 23 years ago promising myself I'd get out after two years of major market experience. While I make fun of how we New Yorkers "tawk" and say "caufee," I see certain parts of the dialect creep into my speech which heretofore was your basic broadcast English. After so many years, I identify myself as a New Yorker.

Out of civic pride and love of my city, I encourage you to visit NYC. To those of you who are New York aficionados: return and revel in that which gives you pleasure here. To those who dream of here or find themselves now in solidarity with NYC, I urge you to come home for the first time and see what has sprung forth from this place, some of which must surely reach out and touch you, here and abroad.

This is a great time to visit New York, especially if you love a bargain. New Yorkers must've invented bargains and comparison shopping. You are going to see deals to attract you in here that will be irresistible.

I consulted with another died-in-the-wool New Yorker, WDFM's Managing Editor, Eileen Shulock. Together, we compiled a pile of NYC links for the visitor and the resident that we think you'll find very useful. We whittled it down to just 32 sites. We had over 100. Please enjoy them and pass them along to all those you think will find them helpful. Now, here with those very pithy NYC site reviews is Eileen. Take it away, ES...

Instead: Stand proud on the streets of Manhattan. Wave a flag. Stop a fireman or a policeman on the street and thank them for their courage. Eat a soft pretzel with mustard from a vendor's cart. Ride in a yellow cab. Just Love New York."
