Dot-Com Carnage It was inevitable that so many online companies would wind up letting so many people go. And in many cases, folding up themselves. Pseudo, APBonline, deepcanyon.com, Boo.com to name just a few, bit the dust recently. Others like Space.com, webMD.com, DrDrew, MTVi, and Garden.com have laid off substantial percentages of their staff recently. Or are about to. Instead of second rounds of funding, we're hearing about second rounds of firings. It gets pretty absurd when you read about "human redundancies" or "having to scale back in order to achieve our aggressive goals". Fortunately the dot-com universe is only a piece of this economy. And unemployment rates are still at historic lows, which means that there are still a lot of jobs out there to be had. So, for the benefit of some of those unfortunate WDFM subscribers who have been laid off, I initiate an effort to help them. Those companies who have sales, marketing or IT positions available can send them to me with salary ranges, cities, titles, and contact info. included and I will feature a few next week and possibly beyond. Please note that sending a notice of an available position does not guarantee you will get listed. Also note that the name of your company will appear in the notice should it get used. The more detailed the information, the better, as it will indicate the position is truly real and not just an attempt to collect resumes. Send job descriptions to: http://wdfm.com/contactlarry.php Good luck. LC P.S. I wish I could take credit for this idea, but I can't. I got it from Alice Rodd O'Rourke, Exec Director of New York New Media Assoc., who thoughtfully contacted NY online firms who recently laid off people, to tell them NYNMA would let the job-seekers into CyberSuds at no charge. The Fall CyberSuds event is a perennial here in NYC, where a record-breaking 5K+ onliners showed up for panel discussions and a trade show that took up two floors at the New York Hilton. Rumor: I heard that the online delivery companies Kozmo.com and fetch.com were rumored to be in merger talks. I don't know if it's true but if it is I have a new name for them: kvetch.com |
